Film Review- The Amazing Spiderman (2012) The reboot of the massive superhero franchise. Going back the origins of Spiderman without Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi. The new look of Spiderman directed by Marc Webb (does anyone find that funny) Andrew Garfield as the Masked Vigilante and Emma Stone as his love interest Gwen Stacey. Even though there is criticism about rebooting a series only a few years after the last film but it’s a fresh start that looks very promising.
Plot- the same origins story of Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) , photography nerd whose Mum and Dad died when he was a child and now lives with his Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) and Aunt May (Sally Field). He falls in love with Gwen Stacey (Emma Stone). whose father is captain of the police. This is about how Peter Parker became Spiderman, spider bite, great power, great responsibility. etc. But there’s a different Villain. Dr Curt Connors who worked with Peter Parker’s Dad and for Oscorp Industries. He takes a serum that makes him into the lizard and he plans to turn the whole entire New York population into Lizards. So Spiderman has to stop them.
Review- Comparison time with the Original Sam Raimi Spiderman film. Actually I don’t have too because this film does exactly the same as the Raimi film but much much more. The look is better, the action scenes are more intense. Andrew Garfield is a brilliant Spiderman is a more likable character compared to Tobey Maguire. Emma Stone is a much better love interest then Mary Jane. Martin Sheen is a great Uncle Ben and Sally Field excels as Aunt May. Now I like the original Spiderman film, it was great but I do prefer this film much better. It looks more fresh, the Spiderman costume looks up to date. The web shooters are more closer to the written material source. The Cast is great, the only thing it is missing is the crazy Newspaper Chief of the Daily Bugle but the Cast is amazing in this film.
The Villain is okay, I like the lizard but I wanted him to be more brutal, he didn’t have time to tear up New York that much but hats off to Rhys Ifans plays the Lizard with great unstable kind of stature. Andrew Garfield is a great Spiderman though, he brings a boyish charm that brought girls to drool all over the floor and Emma Stone is a great actress and she is actually useful here as well, which I like to see a strong woman in films. I can’t really comment on the story because it’s already been done and that’s most probably the biggest criticism for the film. It was only 10 years since the original and people still hold the original with high acclaim but it needed a re boot and it succeeds on every level.
The soundtrack is brilliant again, No cheesy Nickelback songs. (YEAH!) A nice Coldplay song though. The action sequences are brilliant, the choreography is intense and thrilling to watch and the movement is Spiderman is mind bending. The mix between action and character is mixed perfectly. There were loads of incidents of action and emotion and it is beautiful how it is mixed perfectly. Spiderman needed updating and it did with so much success. The chemistry between Garfield and Stone overshadows Maguire and Dunst. It seems so real and there are rumours that it is.
In today’s industry of remakes, sequels and reboots people may find it annoying for Spiderman to reboot after only a few years since the last one. But it was needed. Spiderman 3 was a critical disaster, Tobey Maguire was aging and the Franchise needed some new blood and this is what this film is. If you love superhero films, spiderman great summer blockbusters full of action, humour and character development. This is a film for you.
Overall- The film may of been unnecessary and I wasn’t interested in this film at all but I took a chance and it blew me away. It’s a breath of fresh air in a dwindling franchise which has been overshadowed by The Avengers and Batman. This is the right direction, all they need is a more brutal and unstoppable Villain and I would like a more dark tone compared to the original. At times it was funny with Spiderman’s cracking funny one liners while fighting but I would like a dark tone because I think that the cast can handle that because Stone and Garfield have great potential to be massive stars. Same Story as the 2002 film but much better, fresher, more action packed, funnier and better cast. Superior to the Original Franchise. I can’t wait for the sequel. I’m looking forward to the Franchise. Great Stan Lee Cameo!!! Stay after the Credits for an post credits scene. Film Rating 8/10
